Heading west brings us into the hood known as Prospect Lefferts Gardens. It goes from Clarkson Ave to Eastern Pkwy between East Lake Dr and NY Ave. This hood is mostly residential. Originally it was settled in 1660 by Peter Lefferts, who bought a farm in the area. In 1776, the American Army used the Valley Groove House, a tavern that is no longer there, as a plan to fight the British Army durring the Battle of Brooklyn, but General Henry Clinton had his soldiers go through the Battle Pass instead. In the 1830's, Ralph Malbone, a grocer from Fulton St, bought land from the village of Bedford and named his section Malboneville. In 1860, came the construction of Prospect Pk, which used emminent domain on some of the existing property there. In 1877, the tracks for the Brooklyn, Flatbush, & Coney Island RR were built to allow for transporation from top to bottom throughout Brooklyn. In 1896, came the Brooklyn Museum of Art and the central branch of the Brooklyn Public Library. In 1899, the very first childrens museum was built and opened on Brooklyn and St Marks Ave where it still stands now. In 1910, the Brooklyn Botanic Garden was made featuring Japaneese Tea Gardens that came a bit later. In 1913, Ebbets Field was built for the Brooklyn Dodgers, but it was also home to the football version of the Dodgers as well as the Brooklyn Tigers, who moved to Rochester in 1936. In 1918, a crash occurred on the subway near Malbone St and the city renamed it Empire Blvd after that. In 1935, came the Prospect Pk Zoo, which was placed on a menagerie that was there before. In 1947, Dodgers fans were pleased to see Jackie Robinson, who became the first black player in MLB. Unfortunately, the Dodgers left in 1957 for LA, and Ebbets Field got demolished in 1960 for public housing that did preserve part of it. The postwar era brought a number of immigrants from the Caribbean, who are known for the West Indies Carnival that goes on the Eastern Pkwy. Much of the architecture is mainly brownstones are brick apartments. Although Prospect Lefferts Gardens tends to have its own distinction, it's very commonly associated with Crown Hts.
