Heading up north brings us into the hood known as Crown Hts. It goes from Eastern Pkwy to Atlantic Ave between Classon/Albany Aves. This hood is mostly residential. Originally, it was home to Lenappe Indians until the Dutch settled it and called it Crow Hill in 1630 when Joris Jansen de Rapalje purchased it from the Dutch West India Co. However, the first settlements actually came in 1662 considered it a parcel of free land. In the 1830, the Brooklyn & Jamaica RR ran through allow for transportation to the other end of Brooklyn and to Queens. In 1877, the Brooklyn, Flatbush, & Coney Island RR allowed for additional transportation all the way down to Coney Island. In the 1880's, developement of brownstones and apartments were being built to allow for housing as the Eastern Pkwy was created to be a mall. In 1916, the neighborhood was changed to Crown Hts when Crown St was placed nearby to cut through the hills there. In 1899, the very first children's museum was built in NYC. Most of those living before the Great Depression were mainly Jewish. Unfortunately, many had left for the suburbs in the 1950's, cauing for vaccancies leading to a number of newer immigrants such as blacks and Hispanics, though there were still Jews living there. The 1977 blackout did cause riots and pillaging in Crown Hts. In 1991, a more recent riot occurred when a Hassidic Jew drove his car and hit a black kid, which casued racial tensions including stores being vandalized with some being lead by the infamous Reverend Al Sharpton. More recently, the tensions have declined despite what happened a decade ago. The Jewish Children's Museum offers kids about their Jewish heritage and those who just want to understand Judaism. Crown Hts is also known for the West Indian Carnival that goes on Eastern Pkwy every year in the fall. You can get here by taking the subway to Eastern Pkwy-Brooklyn Museum (2, 3), Park Pl-Franklin Ave (S), Franklin Ave-Eastern Pkwy (2, 3, 4, 5), Nostrand Ave-Eastern Pkwy (3), and Kingston Ave-Eastern Pkwy (3) as well as the Atlanic Ave Branch of the LIRR to the Nostrand Ave Station.
