| Hello, this page really surprised me, as in geography and art books which were in my parents' house Constantinople was depicted as a mass of red-roofed low houses with mosques, former churches and some old towers as the highest points. Some images here look like USA. Where does Turkey get the money from to finance all this huge urban renewal? Were the photos of highways full of cars taken in summer, when emigrants come to pass their vacation in Turkey, or is it so full of traffic all year? Does Turkey have famous brands like Philips, Renault, Toyota etc.? Except in small shops selling groceries for the emigrants it is difficult to find in Western Europe Turkish products recognizable as such, while other emerging markets as China, Korea, Brazil now have famous brands like Lenovo (Chinese computers), Hyundai (Korean cars etc.) and Embraer (medium-sized airplanes designed and produced in Brazil). It looks as if Turkey is much more than loukoum, narguileh, mosques and emigrants fleeing poverty. How do ordinary Turkish city people (for instance, building workers and current office staff) live? Do they have access to reasonable housing or do they live in some kind of favela-like shantytown? Do ordinary Turks have access to education, are there universities, higher technical and other superior education schools in Turkey? Is higher education only for a small elite or accessible to all who have the necessary capacity to study? Is there a differentiated secondary school system which develops the skills of all according to their capacities (in Holland we have a system with several levels and streams in which students are oriented according to their abilities)? Finally, what about religious diversity? In a book on Istanbul in the 17th century I read that then Jews and Greek Orthodox Christians were allowed by the Sultans to live freely and attend church or synagogue without problems, There was no Islam dictatorship then. How is it now? | |||||||||||
