The parks in Melbourne are second to none. The public transport, hospitals, schools etc are all very good too. The city centre is run down, Docklands is a huge disappointment (I work there - Compare the unimaginative Lend Lease Montage to some of the great new developments proposed for Brisbane.) Southbank in Melbourne is cold and uninviting.
I wish we didn't have the casino. Inner suburbia for eg Sth Yarra, Richmond etc is my favourite area, although the eastern suburbs like Hawthorn and Camberwell are good places to live ( Just ask Geoffrey Rush)
20 years ago I thought the Gold Coast was redneck wonderland, Brisbane was a backwater, and that Melbourne and Sydney the only decent places to live.
Now I think Melbourne is stagnating, Sydney is going backwards, and Qld is improving rapidly.
