| AZERBAIJAN: ![]() ![]() Territory: 86,6 thousands sq. km Population: 8.5 mln. people Capital: Baku Azerbaijan is situated in the Caucasus region, on the crossroads of Europe and Asia. Three physical features dominate Azerbaijan: the Caspian Sea, whose shoreline forms a natural boundary to the east; the Greater Caucasus mountain range to the north; and the extensive flatlands at the country's center. About the size of Portugal or the state of Maine, Azerbaijan has a total land area of approximately 86,600 square kilometers, less than 1% of the land area of the former Soviet Union. Of the three Transcaucasian states, Azerbaijan has the greatest land area. Special administrative subdivisions are the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, which is separated from the rest of Azerbaijan by a strip of Armenian territory, and the Nagorno-Karabakh Autonomous Region, entirely within Azerbaijan. Located in the region of the southern Caucasus Mountains, Azerbaijan borders the Caspian Sea to the east, Georgia and Russia to the north, Iran to the south, and Armenia to the southwest and west. A small part of Nakhchivan also borders Turkey to the northwest. The capital of Azerbaijan is the ancient city of Baku, which has the largest and best harbor on the Caspian Sea and has long been the center of the republic's oil industry. | |||||||||||

| Some photos of animals in Azerbaijan: Source: Azerbaijan ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Leopard in Azerbaijan The Leopard lives in the southern regions in Azerbaijan, primarily in the Talysh Mountains and Nakhichevan. Despite occasional sightings, it was not clear whether leopards had been extinct in Azerbaijan by the late 1990s until a species was caught on camera in March 2007 in the Hirkan National Preserve in the Talysh Mountains. ![]() Last edited by galandar; 5th May 2008 at 05:21. | |||||||||||

| Goy-Gol National Park Goy-Gol lake (the blue lake) is believed to be one of the most beautiful places in the world. It was formed in September, 1139 as a result of the strongest earthquake in Ganca. The earthquake took place at a approximately of 3000 m. The boulders of Kapaz mountain broke off the mountain and blocked the Agsu river and other inflows of Kurekchay river. As a result eight very beautiful lakes were formed. Goy-Gol lake is the largest of them. Today, this area is a national park.
