| Grocon to build! Grocon building $850m Gold Coast high-rise 22 March 2007 - The Australian CONSTRUCTION company Grocon is due to announce a deal this week to build its first high-rise tower in Queensland. Executives from the Melbourne-based company are understood to be visiting the Gold Coast this morning to sign the contract to build Juniper Group's $850 million, 77-storey Soul Tower at Surfers Paradise. Juniper chief executive Shaun Juniper and Grocon chief executive Daniel Grollo did not return calls yesterday, but sources said the companies had sealed a deal and an announcement was imminent. Gold Coast City Council approved the project in October 2004. Meanwhile, Grocon is understood to be awaiting the go-ahead on another Queensland project, Austcorp's planned $900 million, 79-storey Vision Tower in Brisbane. Three weeks ago, Austcorp moved to quell speculation that it had scrapped the ambitious plan by announcing it had secured funding from the Bank of Scotland. Austcorp said then that it expected Grocon to start work on the site within a month, but Austcorp executives did not return The Australian's calls yesterday. Juniper's Soul Tower has also attracted industry scepticism, with rumours last year that the company had been negotiating to sell the site. Although far bigger than anything else the Sunshine Coast-based company has developed, the Soul Tower apparently scored enough off-the-plan sales over the long summer holiday season to become viable. Last September, Soul broke the national record for an apartment sale price, after Juniper said its four-level penthouse was under contract to an undisclosed southeast Queensland businessman for $16.75 million. At that time, Juniper said about half Soul's 300 apartments were under contract, and since then, local reports said 16 units were sold in January for a total of $40 million. The tower fronts both the beachfront and Surfers' main retail strip, Cavill Mall. Grocon's appointment may surprise some industry players, who thought the contract would go to Bovis Lend Lease. | |||||||||||

| They really are getting into the QLD market now. Let's hope they build Soul and Vision faster than they built Eureka.
