Metro and Tram projects in Iran

I posted these in separate threads in SSC, but since it didnt generate much (or any) interest, I'll just post them all together here.

The seven largest cities of Iran each with a population of atleast 1 million, houses 15 million Iranians. Plans exist to provide each of them with metro or light rail networks of three or four lines, ranging from 40 km up to 110 km

In addition to Tehran, they are Mashhad, Esfahan, Shiraz, Karaj, Tabriz and Ahvaz. Construction of at least one line has started in each of the cities except Ahvaz.

Ahvaz

Metro - PLANNED

The phase zero studies of Ahwaz Urban Railway Project carried out by Andishkar Consulting Engineers in 2002 calls for the construction of four lines, with a total length of approximately 70 km. Traffic modeling results indicate that line 1 will carry the most passengers (14000 passenger hours per hour each way at peak traffic times). The total length of line 1 is about 23 km and will have 24 stations to provide easy access to the city's major commercial and administrative centers. The travel time, including stops at stations, will be about 40 minutes.

Tabriz

Metro - Under Construction

Tabriz (1.2 mill. inh.) is the centre of north western Iran. An east-west metro line is under construction, passing underneath the historical quarters of the city. The first phase with 6 kms is planned to open at the end of the Iranian year (March 21) and is predicted to carry 20 000 Passengers per hour in both directions.

Shiraz

The “Shiraz Urban Railway Plan” was approved in Esphand of 1380 (May 1999). It currently has 3 lines in construction which together are approximatley 46km long:

- The first line routes from south east (Gole Sorkh) to north east (Ehsan Sq. & Mirza Koochak Khan).

- Second line route from Imam Hossein Sq. to Adel Abad & Mian Rood.

- Third line route. From Mirza Koochak Khan Sq. to Sadra new town.

The length of the Line 1 will be 22.4 Km, the main depot (Rerpair and Parking) is located about 1,300 meter south east of Gol e Sorkh Sq. Line 1 has 20 underground stations and 1 station above the ground. This line passes through municipality territories and real estates (streets, side walks…)

Line one and Line two will have a crossed station at Emam Hossein Sq. Line one and Line three also have two linked stations at Mirza Kuchak Khan Sq.

There will be 10 stations on Line two, 8 underground and 2 stations are above the ground. on Line 3, there will be 8 stations out of which 4 stations are underground and 3 stations above the ground, and one special station which will be connected to the State Railroad (Esfahan – Shiraz) terminal near Golestan Town.

Esfahan

Esfahan (Isfahan) lies in central Iran, some 400 km south of Tehran, and has a metropolitan population of more than 2 million.

The North-South Line run through the city centre from a terminal and depot near the existing Kaveh intercity bus terminal to the Soffeh intercity bus terminal. It runs along the wide Chahrbagh Boulevard. The total length of this line is 12.5 kilometres, with 12.0 kilometres underground. There are 15 stations, (all underground). The Zayandeh Rud river is also crossed in a tunnel. This line has been under construction since 2001 was supposed to be finished by 2005.

From Azadi station another line will start underground and immediately after leaving the station will run on the surface towards the south-west as a regional light rail line, mostly on separate right-of-way, to Pooladshahr and Majlesi. The total length of this line will be 43 km (0.7 km underground and 9.6 km elevated) with 13 stations

Mashad

Tram - Under Construction

The city of Mashad with a population of 2,2 milions has planned a light rail network. Works for the first line have started in 1999. The line will extend for 18km in north-west direction, with 22 stations, with 9km and 11 stations underground. According to news sources this project is 90% completed.

Light trail/tram in mashhad, but it goes underground in some places.
