| The MBTA yesterday evening had a tragic accident on its Green (D Riverside) Line in which one person was killed. At about 6pm, an outbound Green Line train had stopped just short of entering Woodland Station. It had only just been cleared to proceed into the station and had started to slowly move when another outbound train came barreling behind it and had smashed into it with so much force that both trains were knocked off the track! Both trains had as many as 200 passengers on board between them. The train which was rear-ended had it's and smashed to smitherines, almost as falt as a pancake. The train that slammed into it appears to have folded up under itself. One of the four-wheel bogies was knocked loose. The driver of the train that rear-ended the first train was killed. It took the firefighters and rescue workers approximately 6 hours to pulled the woman's mangled body from the wreckage. They used the jaws of Life to try to get at her. But at that point, the rescue effort became a recovery effort. The maximum speed allowed in that section of the track is 40 mph. That was then questioned as to how fast the train was traveling to do that much damage to the 2 trains. The NTSB is at the scene trying to piece together exactly what happened and why. In the meantime, that section of the tracks in both directions has been closed. Buses are in place to transport passengers between Newton Highlands and Riverside Station. There were about 2 dozen other passengers who needed emergenct medical attention. Some were treated at the scene, others were sent to the hospital. All were treated and released except for one who is in serious condition. One of the badly mangled trains has been removed. The other one is still there for the NTSB officials to try to gather info from. It is said that the cars have sort of a "black box". But unlike the ones used in the airplanes, this one only measures how fast or slow the train was going just before it crashed into the other one. The investigation is still ongoing. No word yet as to when the other train will be towed away. -=-=-=-= Officials are now looking into the possibility that the operator who's trolley barreled into the other one might have been talking on her cell phone just before the crash. As everyone knows, the use of a cell phone while operating any vehicle could cause a distraction which could lead to an accident. Last edited by Daquan13; 30th May 2008 at 15:29. | |||||||||||
