| It can be ANY type of vehicle - a bus, train, car, truck or a plane. Here are some that took place in and around Boston, MA: May 28, 2008 Newton, MA. A Green Line trolley on the D (Riverside) Line slams into the rear of another trolley on the same track at almost 40 mph! The driver of the train that crashed into the other was killed. Part of the train catches on fire. It took six hours to get her out of the wreckage! Service on that line was disrupted for nearly a week. April, 2008 Brighton, MA. A Green Line trolley on the B (Boston College) Line was derailed and had crashed into one of the poles that helps support the overhead cantenary wire that provides power for the train. Part of the train catches on fire. Some injuries, but no deaths. April, 2008 Boston, MA. An 18-wheel rig careens out of control along Comm. Ave., smashing into several parked cars, creating a blazing inferno! Service on the Green (B) Line was disrupted for two days. The driver of the rig wasn't killed, but he was cited for the accident. Turns out that he has a notoriously bad driving record. December, 2007 Boston, MA. At the Boylston Street Station, a Green Line trolley crashes into the rear of another trolley, causing a disruption of service on the line. Some were injured, but no deaths. August, 2006 Boston, MA Logan Airport) An AerLingus A-330 takes off from a runway crossing the path of a USAirways Boeing 737 also doing its takeoff run. The two planes had almost collided with each other, classifying the incident as a near-miss. There were no injuries or casualties. The quick thinking of the AerLingus pilots helped them in taking evasive action and getting out of the way of the USAirways plane. It was also reported that Logan Int'l Airport has had at least 9 near-misses at the time of that one. The FAA did an investigation and had come to the realization that Boston's ATC's needed training in how to avoid stuff like this from happening again. July, 2004 Boston, MA (Logan Airport) A Cape Air plane gets caught in the wake turbulence of a Boeing 757 that took off just mere moments earlier. The Cape Air plane's airflow is disrupted and the craft flips over on the runaway at rotation and catches on fire. The pilot was the one one on board. He gets out and walks away from the plane with only minor injuries. January, 1982 Boston, MA (Logan Airport) A World Airways Dc-10 had slid of an icy runway after landing and went nose-first into the harbor water and was partially submerged. The cockpit section was separated from the fuselage. Two men were reported missing and were supposedly never found. The rest of the occupants of the plane had escaped safely. July 31, 1973 Boston, MA (Logan Airport) A Delta Airlines DC-9 attempting to land in thick fog crashes into a sea wall, flips over, breaks up and catches fire. Ninety people, including the pilots and flight attendants, were all kiled. It was said the there was about six minutes of confusion in the control tower, and that those six minutes might have been very important in trying to save some lives from the tragic accident. December, 2001 Boston, MA (Logan Airport) This was not an accident, but it WAS a deversion - or an emergency. An AMR Boeing 767 made an emergency landing here after an attempted act of suicide terrorism onboard the craft. Richard Reid who later boldly admitted that he was working for Osama Binladen and the al Quaeda network, had boarded the plane in London. While the plane is enroute over the Atlantic Ocean, Reid tries to ignite a fuse that was connected to a bomb in the sole of one of his shoes. But because his shoes were wet, he couldn't do it. He was trying to blow the plane up so that it would break up and crash into the sea. He was stopped by some of the crew and passengers, restrained and was arrested after the plane landed. The plane landed safely with no injuries or deaths. He was given the name Shoe Bomber because of what he tried to do and the way that he was trying to do it. He's been tried, convicted and sentensed to life in prison. The plane was origially scheduled to go to Washington. It DID eventually go there sometime later to reposition itself.
