| Not immediately, but I'll do online research on the subject and post it later. The term "amplification" of the canal is very misleading to the casual observer. The canal itself is wide enough. What needs widening are those three bottlenecks known as "locks." But in reality, it's impossible to widen the pre-existing locks. So, the plan calls for building new and wider locks paralell to those already in operation. This will allow passage of the newer behemoth freight-carriers. | |||||||||||

| I preface my findings with the the following: I was wrong about some of the above. The canal itself will actually be widened at Gaillard Cut - the narrow passage that links Gatun lake to the Pacific Ocean. That said, here are the "renders" I found. The new locks will be in triple flights with sliding lock gates on each chamber. ![]() The water storage basins adjacent to each lock chamber are staged in height to allow each of them in turn to be filled by gravity as the lock chamber drains. ![]() Source | |||||||||||
