Two firms announce opening of San Pedro animated studio By the A.M. Costa Rica staff Don't call it Hollywood south yet, but San Pedro now has a multi million dollar media studio. Two companies, Motion Pixel Corp. of Florida and Dart of Costa Rica, are working together on the venture. San Pedro is east of San José and contains the Universidad de Costa Rica. The companies are calling the media studio the biggest in Central America and one of the largest in Latin America, according to a press release. There already are five animated productions being worked on at the facility through the partnership with Indian media firm Pritish Nandy Communications with another 10 in planning, said the release. The firms also promise an aggressive push into the music business recording and promoting Latin American jazz, ethno beat and other music genres. “With our current infrastructure we can now continue to build in many different areas including animation," said Manny Bains of Motion Pixel. "We plan on getting very aggressive with our partner Pritish Nandy in India, as well as with Live Action, targeting shooting four to five live films in the beautiful backdrop of Costa Rica within the next 18 months." “We have worked hard to complete a facility which takes pride in state of the art technology and we can offer a broad range of services to our clients at very competitive prices," said Vinicio Musmanni, chief executive officer of Dart. The operation has everything any group needs including a top class post production facility, he said. “We also plan to become a market leader in DVD authoring and duplication," said Bains. "This is a multi-billion dollar a year industry and we are already in talks with several major media groups worldwide to partner in this area.” Motion Pixel Corp. said it focused on the entertainment industry with partnerships with select media groups and athletes globally. Dart said it is an entertainment production company that promotes artists, musicians, and film makers with the latest technology. The company is also dedicated to digital content creation training for Latin America, it said. Fuente: AM Costa Rica 16 de agosto 2007 | |||||||||||

| Noticias en breve en Inglés de la ultima semana de agosto 2007 (sección "Week in Review" de Nacion.com) GDP increased 8.2 percent The Central Bank of Costa Rica raised its estimate of the increase of production last year. A first estimate, made in November 2006 and disclosed last January, set the increase at 7.9 percent. The reviewed estimate is 8.2 percent, which is equal to the one experienced in 1999, after Intel had arrived here, in 1998. The data refer to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Bank sources said that the adjustment is a normal one, and that the figures could be subject to even further changes. Tico at launching pads Costa Rican scientist Jorge Diaz is one of the people responsible for detecting liquid fuel escapes during the launching of NASA space shuttles. A leak of liquid hydrogen or oxygen can cause the explosion of a space craft, as was the case on January 28, 1986, when a massive leak of liquid hydrogen caused the disintegration of shuttle Challenger 73 seconds after lift off from Cape Kennedy Space Center. That tragedy halted shuttle missions for 32 months and made NASA set up a gas escape monitoring program during launchings. Diaz is one of the ten scientists partaking in the program. Funds for infrastructure The funding of roads, ports, airports, and renewable power projects is the priority for the Central American Economic Integration Bank in Costa Rica, said Harry Brautigam, who chairs the institution. He did so in a meeting with the president of the Central Bank, Francisco Gutierrez, and remarked it when he met with President Oscar Arias. “If they don’t have the proper facilities, the Central American nations will fail to be competitive in the long term,” Brautigam said. He added that Costa Rica is the leading destination for the Bank’s funding, and pointed out that this is so because of the dynamism of this country’s economy, which grows faster than elsewhere in Central America. AIDS research Ten Costa Ricans will partake in the follow-up studies for a new drug used to fight AIDS. These patients developed resistance to the drugs currently available to treat the disease and they need a new option. “The study takes place in 125 countries and it is designed to obtain further data on the effectiveness and safety of using maraviroc –marketed under the brand Selzentry–, said pharmaceutical giant Pfizer’s Central American medical director, Genaro Cuesta. | |||||||||||
