| It is amazing to see the lengths some politicians will go at distorting facts and throwing mud for political expediency. Just because one of the investors in this project (Vahit Kiler) is affiliated with the AKP party, the CHP Istanbul office launched a demagoguing campaign this last August accusing the investors of, as they claimed, illegally completing the underground floors of the project with the "wrong" permit. They did not, however, mention many relevant facts which they must have known but which did not suit their political agenda. What they did not say is that the foundation hole of this project was excavated in 1997-1998 (almost 10 years ago) by a different investor, Mustafa Tatlici. When dug out, that foundation hole was the deepest foundation hole ever excavated in Turkey, with the depth of 42,5 meters. You can view the depth of the foundation, when excavated, at the following photograph from the web site of the excavation company, Kasktas (notice 2 construction workers at the bottom of the pit for comparative analysis of the depth): ![]() Afterwards, Mustafa Tatlici started building underground floors, at least 10 in total, to fill out this foundation hole. However, in 2000-2001, due to the economic crises, he had to stop the construction because of the lack of funds, having completed only 4,5 of underground floors. Since 2001, and in the last 5 years, with such immense depth (-42,5m) and no supporting structures inside to hold its inner walls, several sections of the foundation hole walls collapsed from weather pressures and natural wear, causing closure of adjacent roads and evacuation of some neighboring buildings. Also, since 2003, the banks which lent Mustafa Tatlici money before, has several times offered the foundation hole and construction for sale to potential investors, hoping to reclaim their money, but nobody bided. In the meantime, the foundation walls kept collapsing, with the last collapse occurring as recently as in February 2006. Nobody from CHP was complaining when the foundation walls were collapsing and the adjoining roads were being closed for safety reasons in the past 5 years. As soon as the Kiler group took over the construction earlier this year and started to fill out that hole by completing the remaining underground floors on the basis of the "strengthening and reinforcement permit" ("tahkimat ruhsati") from the municipality, the CHP sprang forward claiming that no such construction can be carried out on the basis of the "reinforcement permit". But how do you keep the walls of the 42.5 meters deep excavation hole from collapsing completely if you do not fill it from inside completely, "strengthening" it and "reinforcing"? It was not Kiler company which excavated that hole 10 years ago and it was not Kiler which caused numerous collapses of its walls in the past 5 years, yet the moment the company stepped in to continue the construction and, subsequently, to address the safety problem, they immediately got surrounded by a screaming mob of political demagogues claiming violations of the building code. One of the main problems in the country is that its development is too heavily dependent on opinions of the demagogues who had not done anything really useful for this country besides writing their little newspaper editorials, the demagogues who see the main mission of their useless lives in rallying against anything that is progressive and original in this country. | You're right Farmir, unfortunately... ![]() But as far as I see, construction is going on.

| Any above-ground activities going on on the construction site? Judging from some of the last photos, they had by then built some of the superstructures. Any continuation of the activities? Any new photos? Thanks for the input. Last edited by Farmir; 14th November 2006 at 22:41. | |||||||||||
