Default Skylife-qld Update

WOW! Breaking Airport News!! A new domestic upgrade which will look similar to the International terminal!! Also a clue that Tiger may be based here!! With DOUBLE the size of the domestic terminal

Extra level for airport

Article from: The Courier-Mail

AN expansion of Brisbane's domestic airport terminal which puts the departure and arrival halls on different levels is set to be rushed through.

Brisbane Airport Corporation spokesman Jim Carden said the upgrade was needed to cope with the increase in passenger numbers.

This Easter, more than 140,000 passengers will use the airport.

"The throughput is about 10 per cent more than last year and, with continually growing traffic, has contributed to us rethinking our timetable for the terminal's upgrade," Mr Carden said.

"Planning for this complex project is at the very early stage but we hope to conclude all details and environmental investigations for an application to go to the Federal Government by Christmas.

"Hopefully within three to five years we will have a revamped complex that will alleviate some of the difficulties we encounter now with the terminal which handles around 12 million passengers a year."

Mr Carden said the expansion plans of airlines including Jetstar, Virgin Blue and Singapore-based Tiger meant the terminal's capacity would need to be doubled to accommodate aircraft, passengers and car parking.

The biggest change in the expansion would be terminal access – a continual source of complaint – with the construction of roads similar to Brisbane's international terminal.

There would be dedicated lanes to carry vehicles dropping off or picking up passengers.

"An elevated road will take departing passengers to the top level where they will check in rather than on the ground level at present," Mr Carden said.

"Below the ramp will be another road that will take away passengers who will arrive on the existing level – which will be modified to separate these people from those waiting to board."

When the airport was privatised in 1990, annual passenger numbers were about six million. In another 10 years, the expected throughput will be close to 20 million.

Great news, although I don't think the doubling of the terminal size is an indicater that Tiger could be based here. They would stil need the space anyway even if they won't be based here because they'll still be flying here.

Sounds good. Will the interiors change much?

Would be nice to get an all new HK/Dubai style domestic terminal, but probably a bit pricey.
