![]() ![]() Past design: Latest news: North Bank to reclaim river's edge Des Houghton 17 February 2007, The Courier-Mail Everyone from university academics to heritage industry nincompoops were finding fault where there was none THE North Bank proposal is a worthy one, but I fear it may get bogged in a stupor of misinformation. The project promises to repair the tumultuous disorder of the river end of the CBD while delivering $270 million worth of "public benefit" infrastructure at no cost to taxpayer or ratepayer. It would also clean up the most unsavoury block in Brisbane and give the river's edge back to the people. As I have already revealed in this column, it will also give us another river crossing. Opportunities like this don't come too often. I walked over the site with Posturing Peter and Blathering Bligh this week and was amazed by the negativity. You would have a jaundiced view of the plan if you watched television, read the papers or listened to radio this week. Everyone from university academics to heritage industry nincompoops were finding fault where there was none. Many were pontificating without having seen the plans. Tourism Minister Margaret Keech sat on the fence when she should have been embracing the new hotel in the proposal. Works Minister Robert Schwarten, who should be supporting job creation projects like these, was missing in action. The truth is the project will not obscure heritage buildings. Quite the opposite. The public access to the heritage buildings will be improved by a series of walkways. The public realm will be reclaimed under an imaginative scheme. Nor will there be a wall of highrise. The tallest building is a modest 36-storeys. Around the corner a 71-storey residential tower called Vision is going up. Down the road work has begun on a 69-storey building called Aurora. If North Bank is ever built it will effectively be six levels lower than the new Brisbane Square tower opposite. Concrete jungle? Hardly. There is generous open space, a seafood market, shops, gyms, an Olympic pool, gardens, 480 apartments and offices. The architects and master planners, Cox Rayner, have added some splendid features. I especially like the transparent office towers that are not just the same old horizontal columns with vertical slabs. These ideas are reminiscent of work by Rem Koolhaas, the influential Dutch architect. Google his latest project, the China Central Television in Beijing, and you'll see what I mean. Brisbane has a lot to gain from North Bank -- and much to lose if it does not go ahead. ----------------------------------------------------- 14 March 2007 = Dday time ----------------------------------------------------- ![]() Last edited by SoulVision; 7th July 2008 at 12:54.. | ||||||||||||
