$13m upgrade due for Brunswick St station
Tony Moore | March 15, 2007 - 4:25PM

Work will finally start on an upgrade of Brunswick Street Station in June after three false starts, but it will mean closures of platforms and disruptions to rail services at Queensland's third busiest train stations.

Two of the four platforms will be close for short periods during the construction.

"We will want to close two platforms - perhaps for a day," a spokesman for Transport Minister Paul Lucas said.

More than 4500 commuters use the station at both morning and evening peak hours.

Queensland Rail is now making the final changes before letting rail commuters know of the likely impacts.

The train station will continue to operate, but the work will take around 18 months.

The Government still expects the $13 million-plus upgrade to be finished by December 2008, though it has still to finalise negotiations with the Buchan Group, who have won the tender contract.

Premier Peter Beattie apologised to rail commuters and Fortitude Valley residents in State Parliament this morning and promised that Translink and Queensland Rail would provide early information on how the upgrade would effect them.

The long-awaited upgrade was supposed to start in November, but has been delayed by negotiations with the owner of the site, Lend Lease.

"We remain committed to seeing the project through and subject to the finalisation of negotiations with the contractor, construction will begin in June," he said.

Comment from Lend Lease was being sought this afternoon.

Mr Beattie said one of the reasons for the delay was the ongoing negotiations with Lend Lease for more space on the concourse area.

This extra space is needed for access to many of the important features planned for the new station, including lifts, escalators and new stairs.

"To this point we have had difficulty coming to an agreement with the site owner over the terms for the small amount of vital extra space we need," the Premier said.

"I am confident Lend Lease will come to the table on this issue and negotiations will be finalised this week."

Transport Minister Paul Lucas said although his patience had been exhausted he acknowledged the Brunswick Street upgrade was a very complex project.

Mr Lucas said unforeseen difficulties caused by the structure of the building had also contributed to the delay. "The building that Brunswick Street Station is housed in was built in the seventies," Mr Lucas said.

"Investigations as to what will need to be done to the structures of the building to accommodate the upgrade have found it is a more complex task than we first thought.

"This is not uncommon in projects involving upgrades to older buildings, however it has meant a further delay in the planning process," he said.

Information on the planned closures will be on the Translink website. A new updated version, went live today.

Upgrade to close Brunswick St rail platforms
Tony Moore | May 22, 2007 - 2:18PM

Work begins on the upgrade of complex $33 million Brunswick Street train station next month and includes new lifts, escalators and stairs to each platform from the retail level of the Valley Metro Centre.

However, the work to the 30-year-old station does involve significant inconvenience to rail travellers, Transport Minister Paul Lucas said today.

During the first phase of work, platforms three and four will be closed from public access from July 2007 until March 2008, Mr Lucas said.

"This means that trains will not stop at these platforms and some passengers will need to change trains at Central or Eagle Junction stations for a service which stops at Platform 1 or 2 at Brunswick Street Station," he said.

Queensland Rail and Translink are still to announce details on the changes to the train services, though they are expected soon.

Details of the work were released at lunch time after State Cabinet yesterday approving $22.4 million to make sure the work can be built by December 2008.

Brunswick Street station is the third busiest train station in Queensland with 2.5 million passengers a week.

Mr Lucas said he wanted Valley rail commuters to be aware that the process was going to "lengthy and complex".

"Make no mistake, this project is not going to be a simple, quick task," he said.

"The station itself and the airspace development above it, is over 30 years old, making this a difficult process given it is the third busiest station behind Roma Street and Central," he said.

The newly-developed station will include lifts, escalators and stairs, with a ceiling running through the platforms, newer seating, signing and brighter lighting.

Community and school groups will be asked to help with the artwork in the new rail centre.

The contract to build the new station won by Bovis Lend Lease.
