King George Square Revitalisation - Official Opening

King George Square is an icon of Brisbane’s civic heart.

Over the past three years, the popular space has undergone a dramatic transformation to deliver a new sub-tropical, vibrant space in the city centre.

On Sunday, 25 October 2009 join Lord Mayor Campbell Newman for the official opening of the ‘new look’ King George Square.

From 11am be a part of the community celebrations as the Square brought to life with a spectacular array of music, dance and performance.

There's been a bit of talk about people being upset there is no grass. I don't understand? In such a busy square... having grass just isn't an option and if you look at the grass at Queens Park, its all brown and dried up anyway.

What we have is much better. Would like to see a big screen now.

Took some pics on the weekend.

The first thought I had when I walked into the square was "wow this is very open..." reminds me a bit like Tiananmen square.

Generally I like it... however, i can't help but think the original Slug and Tower design would be better.

I love the dark grey textures they have used. Although, it just seems like it is a little blank... would be excellent for large celebrations but something better could have been designed with that in mind, ie Times Square in NYC holds a lot of people, yet somehow is quite visually appealing.

Something needs to go in the middle of the square... like a giant glass cube with huge screens on each side showing news, documentaries, local Brisbane films or something. I'm sure Foxtel would jump at the opportunity to be a broadcaster, thats free advertising right there.

Where is the creativity? Why can't we try doing something "wow" different... something unique enough people go "that's cool, it's different". What we have now is pretty okay, but its nothing amazing... and its time Brisbane deserves amazing.

Northbank's Entrepot idea comes to mind...

those are some wonderful photos, i still havent been done to KGS but I like the final outcome. very very practical and i think most it works as a good thorough fare and also a wonderful piece of civic space. cant wait till they host an event there of some kind :-)
