Sounds like not a bad idea to group a nmber of flash hotels facing the botanic gardens however I am unsure how either of these proposals at the stated heights will get through council re shadowing issues.

Still, just adds to the boom!

That's excellent! The Parkroyal site is certainly needing something more provincial there...

Nice!

Sultan plans six-star hotel
27 May 2007 - Sunday Mail, The

ONE of the world's richest men is considering building an opulent "six star" 50-storey hotel overlooking Brisbane's City Botanic Gardens.

Plans for the futuristic hotel are on a central business district site owned by the billionaire Sultan of Brunei.

The Sultan, Hassanal Bolkiah, is considering demolishing the 10-storey Royal On The Park hotel on the corner of Alice and Albert streets to make way for the new development.

The Sultan has owned the 7000 sq m site for more than a decade.

The proposed project, worth hundreds of millions of dollars, is directly opposite the site for another proposed $425 million, "six star" 50-storey hotel under consideration by Devine developers.

Industry sources say the Sultan, the ruler of a tiny oil-soaked nation who is known for his extravagant behaviour, may not have liked the idea of a more opulent hotel facing his own project.

Brisbane architect Bevan Lynch is overseeing both projects and said the luxury hotel was in the early planning stages.

The Sultan has a personal collection of more than 5000 luxury cars.

He owns the Dorchester Hotel in London, the Beverly Hills Hotel in LA and the Palace Hotel in New York.

Pity:

Hotel owners reject demolition claims
June 7, 2007 - 5:40PM

The owners of a Brisbane hotel have rejected claims that one of the world's richest men is considering demolishing it to make way for a 50-storey, six-star hotel.

Media reports have suggested the Sultan of Brunei is considering demolishing the 10-storey Royal On The Park hotel, which overlooks Brisbane's Botanic Gardens, to make way for the new development.

The Sultan - who owns the Dorchester Hotel in London, the Beverly Hills Hotel in LA and the Palace Hotel in New York - has owned the Brisbane site for more than a decade.

But the hotel owners say that while they have received "various proposals" for potential expansion, they are not considering demolition.

They said the proposals were a common occurrence because of the dynamic Brisbane hotel market.

"There is no consideration at present to demolish the building and we will continue to successfully trade as normal," Royal On The Park general manager Mark Evans said.

"Royal On The Park continues to contract rates and functions for the period of 2008-2009 and beyond to all their clients."

Mr Evans said the hotel had just completed a $500,000 refurbishment of its executive suites, spa suites and public areas.
