As I've said on SSC, I support just about everything on this scheme, it's just fantastic news. I do, however, wholey oppose the bridge between New Farm/Teneriffe and Bulimba. 1) It isn't needed as both communities ae linked by a lovely little (and constant) ferry service that is utilised by all in the area and adds to the charm of the area there. and 2) This is a very wide section of the river, and it would destroy the views and scenery of this area. This bridge simply is not needed, and is a waste of 80 mill. I also argue that the bridge linking New Farm with Kanaroo Point is also both grossley unwarrented and would create more visual displeasure as you can easily walk up onto the Story Bridge from both spots on both sides of the bridge, and enjoy stunning views.

Apart from that, I LOVE the idea of a tram line running from Vernon Terrace, up Brunswick, through Adelaide St, over to West End and South Bank, and back up through Adelaide and up to Bowen Hills (although I argue it needs to continue up to Albion). But the ped bridge linking Eagle St and Kangaroo Point is a good idea in theory, but again, do we require it when there is both the Story bridge on one end, and the Goodwill Bridge on the other, and a lovely uninterupted stretch of the river to enjoy from the seat of a city cat.

I think that a bridge would never be an eyesore if it was designed and planned properly... Just look at the story bridge, it brought life to the river when it was first built and has complemented the river ever since.

This out from the Brisbanetimes... I think I might vote for Greens they actually might build this bloody thing!

The proposed "three rings" network
Brisbane tram network should be bigger
Georgina Robinson | July 20, 2007 - 2:10PM link

The Greens want a larger tram network in Brisbane's CBD that links George Street to QUT and shares the Inner Northern Busway's route around Petrie.

The party's Lord Mayoral candidate Jo Bragg today unveiled her vision for an inner-city transport plan anchored by a three-ring light rail network and two new CityCat stops.

Trams would ring three connected areas; one around the CBD and linking up with QUT's Gardens Point campus, another ringing the Fortitude Valley precinct and the final, largest ring encasing the Petrie area and following the Inner Northern Busway route.

Two extra CityCat terminals would go in at Milton and NorthShore at Hamilton.

Ms Bragg said the Greens' tram network would cost roughly $50 million more than the Premier's estimated $250 million Smart Cities plan, although both costings were provisional.

She said in addition to the state government contribution, the Greens would reduce roads funding in the Brisbane City Council budget to fund the network.

Using the Inner Northern Busway for the Petrie section, instead of Gregory Terrace, would deliver cost savings, Ms Bragg said.

She also said expanding the network would pick up more people by stopping at key linkages around the inner-city area.

"Compared to other proposals, (ours) has three main extra loops, Petrie Valley and City Ring, with essential connections to Bulimba, Bowen Hills, Kelvin Grove and Kurilpa," she said.

"These will better connect to where workers and commerce actually are."

The Green City Links plan also includes special "safe shopping zones" with reduced speeds.

YES! Trams for Brisbane, about time!

Now.. lets hope these new MAN Artics for the fleet get cancelled, as we should be buying up big on LR trams.

The greens? Build things?

Maybe after 20 years of environmental studies and community discussions.

Changed my mind on the trams for the following reasons:

Trams don't have much extra capacity than buses...i.e. the cost of implimenting the tram network isn't worth it for the slight rise in capacity.

The capacity of Trams cannot be increased easily. You'd need to put tram lines side by side which would result in resumptions.

We already have an issue with not enough kerb space for buses let alone adding trams to the mix.

Trams are above ground.

My solution is a metro system. Yes it is more expensive but it solves the issues mentioned above and it can be connected to the greater rail network. It also provides straightline access rather than going around current obstacles. It would easily connect Woolloongabba, Bulimba, Kelvin Grove etc in a straight line to the city creating increased access etc.
