| Just off a Courier Mail blog: Cool concept. Four rings around the inner city, although i think there should be an underground stop at Eagle St/Golden triangle. ![]() Map of Brisbane’s underground rail loop Craig Johnstone | Thursday, September 18, 2008 at 01:29pm | Courier Mail SICK of waiting for the Bligh Government to release details of what it plans for Brisbane’s choked transport network? Well, click here to see one architect’s idea of what a truly functional subway system in the Queensland capital would look like. Says Riddel Architecture: Currently, public transport focuses on getting people to the centre of the city. However, what is needed is an easy way of getting around the inner areas quickly where densities are dramatically increasing. The proposed underground metro station network is a two-way circle line that can service an area up to a radius of three kilometers from the centre of the city. The first phase of the network has three different lines that intersect at key underground metro stations located at Southbank, Brunswick St, Central, Roma Street and Petrie Bight. At these stations the lines are at different levels and are connected by an escalator to each other and the surface. It is envisaged that the trains continue on the Metro network on their continuous circular routes and pass every station at 5 minutes internals during the day and at 10 minute intervals after midnight. The proposed Metro allows transfer to a number of central main line stations. Over time, the network could be extended so that it integrates with existing heavy rail, ferry or bus way networks. Incidentally, tomorrow is being marked as PARK (ing) Day in Brisbane. Here’s some details. Last edited by SoulVision; 18th September 2008 at 13:46.. | |||||||||||

| Very clever indeed. Love it. The highlight being the inter-suburb transport abilities, rather than just a linear travel route to the CBD. | |||||||||||

| Brisbane trains go underground Tony Moore | October 7, 2008 - 9:27AM Underground rail stations are proposed for Spring Hill, Woolloongabba, West End, Central Brisbane and the RNA Showgrounds as part of the Queensland Government's Inner City Rail Capacity Study. The plan - which requires funding from the Federal Government - will be released in full this afternoon by Premier Anna Bligh. Under the plan underground tunnels up to 13 kilometres long would link stations, which could be up to 45 metres underground. Premier Anna Bligh told state parliament this morning the underground rail network would be delivered in two stages over the next 20 years, and could begin by late 2012. "We are talking about the largest single public transport project ever undertaken in Queensland, more than matching our investment in busways," Ms Bligh said. The project was announced in mid-2007, describing the need for tunnels to increase the capacity for extra train services into Brisbane's CBD. A detailed feasibility study would now be undertaken. Ms Bligh said "visionary solutions" could be considered when the Federal Government worked with the states. She said the fast-growing city needed world-class trains. "The rail study released today is a vision of the future that, with Federal Government help, can transform public transport services here for generations to come," Ms Bligh said. "We live in the fastest growing part of Australia. "We are a city that is coming of age, and we need to reflect this in our public transport infrastructure." The $14 billion rail project would be part-funded by the Federal Government's $20 billion Infrastructure Australia fund. Transport Minister John Michel told parliament that Prime Minister Kevin Rudd was in Brisbane today to talk through Queensland's submissions to the Infrastructure Australia Fund. "That’s why today’s announcement on the Inner City Rail capacity study is so important. What this is about is future proofing our rail system," he said. "What this study shows is that we are planning for the long term future of public transport in this state and with Federal government help this project can become a reality." Last week, state and federal leaders at the Council of Australian Governments (COAG) meeting agreed to fast track big-ticket infrastructure spending to help shield the economy from continuing global financial turmoil. Other transport projects the state has put forward for potential federal funding: the Bruce Highway upgrade; Darra to Springfield road and rail link; Brisbane's Eastern Busway project; the Gateway Motorway north and south upgrades; Port of Brisbane motorway; Gold Coast rapid transit project; Abbot Point multi-use harbour; Mount Isa rail corridor and the Toowoomba bypass. Legislation to pass the Infrastructure Australia Fund is due to go before federal parliament next week. | |||||||||||
