Light rail solves all problems the inner city is currently experiencing... Its a hop on hop off solution which is cheap, it can run on busways, is much more visually and physically appealing to commuters, will reduce car dependency in the inner city... buses do not.

I think we would be stupid not to implicate a light rail system in Brisbane. Look how successful Melbourne's system is... of course there's is and will always be much bigger but Trams are the best form of transport for a city like Brisbane.

Yes, a metro would be good... but it would not be financially viable for another 50 so years. Light rail is.

Light rail would also be at capacity immediately, so even though it would be more attractive you couldn't get more people on anyway.

Heavy rail is also cheaper to run per person than light rail.

Melbourne also doesn't have a significantly higher % patronage compared to Brisbane even with their light rail network.

Absolutely I have always liked the idea of running trams down the busways to replace the 111 & 333 routes, freeing up more buses for surburban feeder routes and offering a frequent & reliable commute into the city. Idealy it would be cool to have them run into tunnels through the underground bus station too and around the city like a subway!

Exactly... Like a subway indeed... It would be awesome if we could integrate all our systems into one, such as running trams on our busways and tunnels like what they have done in Spain... although its integrated with their train system. Check this out thanks to vichase.

TRAM is an tram-train, train and tramway network in Alicante (325mil people) the network is mostly segregated (elevated, underground, trench...), the TRAM Network will have an Intermodal Station wich includes Renfe lines, High Speed Lines, Buses Lines and TRAM(5 Lines), it will be operative about 2009-2010. En español seguro que me explico mejor jaja, el TRAM es una empresa que gestiona Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat Valenciana (la misma que Metro de Valencia) opera con tranvias, trenes-tram y trenes, la ciudad principal (por donde el trazado es subterraneo) tiene 325mil habitantes, pero en total las lineas dan servicio a casi 700.000 personas, en los meses de verano daria servicio a unos dos millones, las vias del TRAM discurren en un 90% segregadas y en pequeños tramos sobre plataforma reservada lo que hace que los trenes vallan a una velocidad constante durante todo el trayecto. Las estaciones normalmente son de dos vias, pero las estaciones de trasbordo son la mayoria de 3 y a aparte las estaciones de las principales ciudades/pueblos por donde pasa el TRAM tienen 3 o mas.

But the government (and many people) are obsessed with the nostalgia of running the light rail (trams) on the streets of the CBD. This is what I am worried about.
