| I am, frankly shocked that the Greens are against this! That is a very stupid move by the Greens in my opinion. High density is good! "It's the CBD, there's no community," he said. << How dare he say that! The CBD is the most exciting community in this entire region. Drew Hutton is an absolute idiot! "forecast soulless concrete canyons" - What a joke! Good on our current city council for sticking by this plan South Brisbane Plan - Up to 25 floors Article from: The Courier-Mail | link John McCarthy December 18, 2007 11:00pm BRISBANE'S CBD is about to leap the river with the release of a draft plan allowing for 25-storey buildings in South Brisbane. The Greens and West End residents are horrified at the prospect and forecast soulless concrete canyons but council planners claim the increased density at Kurilpa, on the banks of the Brisbane river, will allow West End's character to be retained. The council's Kurilpa draft plan stretches from Melbourne St and Boundary St to Montague Rd and the river with the Gallery of Modern Art at its heart. The West End Community Association and the Greens say Kurilpa will be swallowed by the CBD and blame council for forcing the issue by allowing so much residential development in the CBD that business has been forced elsewhere. But urban planning chairman David Hinchliffe said council had a vision for Kurilpa to become a hub of economic, cultural and social activity. Council estimates the area could provide 760,000sq m of new floorspace over the next 15 to 20 years, providing accommodation for about 6000 people and about 14,000 employees. Affordable housing would be built on the redeveloped Open Learning Institute in Cordelia St and the draft plan recommends the Parmalat site be converted to open space and parkland. Further green space would be developed between the William Jolly Bridge and Grey St while a public transport bridge would link Adelaide St with the bus depot at South Brisbane. Cr Hinchliffe said apart from the recently completed Millennium Arts development, Kurilpa had missed the investment boom experienced by other parts of South Brisbane. "While its neighbours have enjoyed the limelight as the city's primary arts, entertainment and cultural centre, for the most part Kurilpa still lacks any clear direction or identity," Cr Hinchliffe said. "We want the future of Kurilpa to be a cosmopolitan mix of retail, dining, arts and entertainment, with office, residential and community facilities attracting a diverse range of people from workers to residents, students to visitors." Greens candidate Drew Hutton said there was little incentive for affordable housing or to house people working at the nearby hospitals, universities and cultural centre. "It's the CBD, there's no community," he said. The West End Community Association president Darren Godwell said expansion of the CBD should head towards Bowen Hills, rather than South Brisbane because of better transport links. He also criticised the process and the lack of consultation with the community. But council said the original vision for Kurilpa had been strengthened to provide more emphasis on placemaking, arts/culture, innovation, identity and the public realm. | Don't know anyone going to Griffith. I've also got a question, this regarding Regent Tower. How exactly does the development application get approved or denied? Are there Brisbane City Council hired town planners who assess the development? And if this project meets all required regulations, they kind of have to approve it don't they. If they don't approve it and it meets all requirements, the developer can sue the council right? I'm glad this is a joint venture between two major companies, Multiplex and ISPT that can get through all this council election 'keep the Nimbys happy' crap. | |||||||||||
