Seeing as though i don't have to go to school tomorrow, i will try and go over to Kmart Plaza and get some pics. They have completley demolished the place where all the speciality shops used to be, so all that is left is Kmart and Coles, and a walkway in between.

Yeah I will, i have better things to do with my life than go to our school's swimming carnival. BTW The Edge (12st) is now starting to peak above the other buildings around it.

ALL IN ONE . . . an artist's impression of the three-level expanded state-of-the-art Stockland centre

Quote:
STOCKLAND is expanding with bookend developments.

A two-level Myer store will be built over part of the site of the current Kingsvale and Sunvale shopping centres and a three-level retail, entertainment, cinema and parking complex will be built on land at the corner of Ross River Rd and Nathan St.

The centre's existing Big W store will be expanded and the existing Woolworths supermarket will be relocated to a new site incorporating the former IGA supermarket site and the old Commonwealth Bank building which will be demolished.

Stockland Trust general manager for retail development Stewart White said the remake would cost more than $200 million and create more than 1200 jobs.

The new buildings for the cinemas and new Myer store would be `bookends' for an expanded state-of-the-art Stockland centre.

"We are looking to have a retail mix and finish that complement the Myer brand," Mr White said.

After months of speculation and red herrings on planned store layouts _ including suggestions that Myer would displace the Rebel and Crazy Clarks stores _ Stockland yesterday released an artist's impression of the three-level building.

However it said the layout plans were still confidential, and would not comment on rumours that homes on Patrick and Alfred streets were being bought up for a further expansion.

The company has applied to the State Government to close Elizabeth St between Ross River Rd and Patrick St, which currently accommodates a bus interchange station.

Elizabeth St is to be rerouted around the Myer store site.

Mr White said the rooftop car park on the shopping centre was to be extended over Elizabeth St with entrances to Myer at ground level and the second level car park.

The three-level Ross River Rd/Nathan St building would include restaurants, cinemas, a gymnasium, a bowling alley and leisure retailers as well as a multi-level car park.

Mr White said the buildings at either end of Stockland would be designed to attract more attention to the centre from passing traffic and add more colour to the complex.

A tower with the Stockland sign would be visible from blocks away.

Their vision was to position Stockland as the premier shopping centre in Townsville with Myer as its key tenant.

Wide pedestrian areas and mall walkways would open on to Ross River Road adjacent to the Myer store and the entertainment and leisure complex providing `big entrance' statements.

Car parking spaces would be increased by 500 spaces to about 2400.

Mr White said a start to work depended on approval processes with the State Government and Townsville City Council, however he hoped it would be under way some time in 2008.

Construction will take 12 to 18 months.

He said all the land that was required for the development had been secured and a lot of work was proceeding behind the scenes to deliver the Myer development as soon as possible.

Discussions were under way with a number of cinema operators.

"We'd be looking at all the high-end fashion retailers, (such as) Country Road, Witchery," Mr White said.

"We've got a great relationship with a number of national retailers who are not represented here because there is no space for them."

While a formal development application was yet to be lodged, Townsville Mayor Tony Mooney said the council had received `pre-lodgement' material to allow the council to begin its work.

"We have given pretty much a very strong tick of approval from this point.

"The community are very hungry for it and want to know when it's coming."

Cr Mooney said the council would have to deal with related issues.

He believed the road layout where a new Elizabeth St alignment would connect Ross River Rd to Patrick St
would overcome some of the neighbourhood concerns.

"Access on to Ross River Road, that's what I was looking for," he said.

"There will be guaranteed access through this new road and once people can see this is guaranteed, that will overcome these concerns.

"We are going through the process as though the development application has been lodged. We are meeting all the planning issues because we don't want any hurdles for this opening."

Wow nice! The roof looks a bit like Goma in Brisbane!

Very nice exterior. Wood or copper I wonder?

STOCKLAND KMART PLAZA REDEVELOPMENT

The new proposal launched to the Rocky CC to include underground parking has been approved, and will feature 463 carparks, bringing the total to 3600+ parking spaces. Also to maximise space in the shopping centre, the loading docks for Kmart and Coles are also underground.

Another 10 new shops have been included, make it 75 new shops in total, which will make it approx 230 shops.

This is where the 46 specialty stores, Kmart Tyre and Auto, and half of the Kmart store used to be

A couple of renders inside of the bridge structure that will join the two centres. (sorry about the bad angle, but it was hard to get the full thing standing front on as there is not much room in the corridor.

All that is left of Kmart Plaza, this is the pathway beside Coles, and Kmart and the toilets are behind.

The old Kmart sign

All that is left from the outside of the centre

I thought at first this was just a fitout/refurbishment of Kmart Plaza, but they are actually demolishing the whole centre. Kmart and Coles will stay where they are till the end of 2008, and that part of the centre will be demolished when Kmart and Coles move into their new stores.
