MONSTER ROAR ... Townsville's new V8 Supercar racetrack takes in Boundary St and Charters Towers Rd and will require a new bridge

Townsville V8s are on track

DANIEL BATEMAN l September 24th, 2008 l Townsville Bulletin

AUSTRALIAN racing champions are revved up with excitement after catching a glimpse of Townsville's new V8 Supercar racing track. The State Government yesterday unveiled the track the hi-octane cars will use when they race in Townsville for the first time on July 10 to 12 next year.

The track, which will be centred on Reid Park, features tight turns for drivers, and the addition of a new bridge for the city.

However, fears have been raised that the new bridge and the bitumen laid for the track might not be finished by the project's tight deadline.

Current V8 Supercar champion Garth Tander said the project design would impress both drivers and fans.

"The pit lane and pit building is in a perfect location and there's heaps of room for the fans to get around the inside and outside of the track," Mr Tander said.

Former Bathurst winner Steve Richards said drivers were looking forward to racing on the new track.

"I think this track has the ingredients for close racing and good passing," Mr Richard said.

V8 Supercar driver Steven Johnson also approved the new track.

"In terms of the finished product, I really think it will be one of the better tracks for passing ... from what I've seen first-hand, a very spectator friendly track," Mr Johnson said.

Leighton Contractors have been awarded the contract for building the racetrack, and construction is expected to begin in coming weeks.

The track will be 2.85km long and 12m wide and centred on Reid Park, taking in Boundary St and Charters Towers Rd.

The track loops around Railway Estate Park, through Reid Park behind the Townsville Civic Theatre, and will go over a new bridge crossing Ross Creek adjacent to the new Townsville railway station.

Sports Minister Judy Spence said: "The Reid Park redevelopment will be a great asset for the people of Townsville, both as a motor racing precinct and as a community green space."

A spokeswoman for Ms Spence said it was up to Townsville City Council whether the new bridge would be open during non-race periods.

Townsville Mayor Les Tyrell said: "I really can't answer that one. I would expect it to be, but I really couldn't tell you."

V8 Steering Committee chairman Tony Ireland said Leighton had an extremely tight deadline, and it was vital that construction of the new bridge started within a few weeks.

"There's no problem with the timing of the safety stuff, the grandstands, all that stuff," he said.

"There's no real problem if they don't finish the pit building in time, in reality, because they'll at least have the pit bays open.

"The critical ones are the laying of the bitumen and the finishing of the bridge.

"Leightons are more than aware of the problems of those two things, and are confident they can do it.

"You've just got to go with them."

V8 Supercar spokesman Col Hitchcock said everything had been taken into consideration, right down to the weather.

"Everything is on track for July 10 to 12, 2009, no question," Mr Hitchcock said.

"The wet season and any other potential delays have all been factored into the deadline.

"All of those variables are built into the contract, so whoever pursued that contract had to assure the Government they would build on time, taking all of those variables into account."

Leighton Contractors northern region general manager Darren Weir said the project management and construction group looked forward to the opportunity presented to their organisation.

"We are excited to be involved with such a significant sporting project for North Queensland and look forward to getting on with the job of delivering the race infrastructure – including the track, new bridge over Ross Creek, permanent pit building and associated park enhancements," he said.
