| ![]() Townsville 400 – launching into history JESSICA JOHNSTON l November 17th, 2008 IT was the biggest V8 Supercar ticket launch in Australian history. Thousands of fans formed a queue a kilometre long to get their hands on the first Townsville 400 tickets at Jupiters Casino yesterday. Fans drove for up to six hours and others camped overnight to ensure they wouldn't miss out on their tickets, which went on sale only for North Queenslanders at 9am. More than 10,000 tickets sold during the launch and via phone in just eight hours yesterday. V8 Supercars Australia events general manager Shane Howard said it was the biggest response the sport had ever had at a ticket launch in Australia. "We're overwhelmed by the response here from the people. It's just outstanding. We've never actually experienced this level of support at any other race for a ticket launch in Australia," Mr Howard said. "This is a first for us, and it's a first to open it up to the residents of North Queensland. They voted with their feet. "I think people are very excited about it, we certainly are, and Townsville is going to be one of our big marquee events. "We've got a great format for the race here, we've got a great circuit, we're going to have overwhelming support, so the recipe is in place." Mr Howard said the inaugural event would involve more than just car racing, with concerts and other activities being planned. "It will go for a week – and you'd want to get plenty of sleep because you won't get any when we're in town." Karla and Matt Falzon drove all the way from Moranbah with their sons James, 2, and Harry, 1. "It was a six-hour drive. We got here about 11pm on Friday, and lined up at 5am today (Sunday) and got premium grandstand tickets," Mrs Falzon said. "We were going to try by phone, but our friends have been trying all day and couldn't get through, so we're glad we did it." Mount Low resident Garry Cahill had Ticketek on redial as he waited in the queue. "I've been calling since 8am – the lines are busy," Mr Cahill said. Lisa Goodwin travelled from Ingham and lined up at 7.30am to buy tickets for her husband Gavin, who spent the day fishing. "He's going to be paying for me to go shopping, that's for sure," Mrs Goodwin said. Blaine Thomas, who has family in Townsville, travelled all the way from New Zealand to join the queue. "I came over for the weekend for this – it's all about the power on the wheels," Mr Thomas said. "The first race in Townsville – I couldn't miss it." From tiny babies to great-grandmothers, fans patiently lined up for an average of four hours before finally being served. And despite the heat, spirits remained high as drivers Jamie Whincup, James Courtney, Rick and Todd Kelly, and Fabian Coulthard spent hours wandering from one end of the line to the other, signing autographs and mingling with fans. The drivers said they were thrilled with the turn-out and were eagerly awaiting the inaugural race from July 10-12 next year. "If this is any indication of what's to come, it's going to be an awesome event," Mr Courtney said. The exclusive North Queensland ticket sale will continue at Ticketek outlets or by calling 132 849 until 5pm tomorrow, before the rest of the country gets their hands on tickets from 9am on Wednesday. | |||||||||||

| ![]() Part of Boundary Street, where the Lou Lister Park, Townsville high school and civic centre are located, makes up the long main straight with the pit facilities at the far eastern end of the straight. The clockwise circuit then swoops around to Charters Towers Rd and a purpose-built road featuring a bridge across Ross Creek will link the track through Reid Park. The map shows five viewing mounds – two of which are joined together, and a support paddock south-west of the track. | |||||||||||
