|  Yeppoon cashes in while Rocky shops stay shut 22nd November 2008 IS ROCKHAMPTON missing out on millions of dollars of business because most of the shops are closed on Sundays? Rockhampton Regional Development boss Rick Palmer thinks it might be. He says there's circumstantial evidence that shoppers from throughout the region, including Rockhampton, are flocking to Yeppoon on Sundays to stock-up on supplies. And he hopes that a survey of 1200 residents will shed more light on the debate. Rockhampton Regional Development has shelled out $10,560 to CQUniversity to quiz 400 Rockhampton residents and 800 from broader Central Queensland to gain an understanding of what people actually want. "There are strong opinions on both sides and this survey will give us a scientific indication of the region's views," said Mr Palmer, the acting chief executive. "Since seven-day trading came to Capricorn Coast, there have been reports of substantial numbers of people in the city who go to Yeppoon just to shop on Sundays. "I'm interested in seeking the views of people who live outside Rockhampton but who use the city to get access to goods and services. Are they interested in coming to the city on Sundays?" The survey has been completed and the results are currently being collated and analysed at the university. "I think the results should be clear before Christmas," said Mr Palmer. If there is overwhelming support for Sunday trading in the city it would be up to the Industrial Commission to approve or reject any application to start seven-day shop opening. The survey goes into considerable detail, asking respondents if they would buy goods and services in the city if shops were open on Sundays, if they travelled to other towns or cities to buy goods and if they would spend more money with Rockhampton businesses if they traded on Sundays.
