Sunday rest threat
July 14, 2008

IT'S OFTEN said even God takes a break on Sunday ... but should retailers have the same privilege?

Opinion was yesterday split among Sunday shoppers at Rockhampton's Red Hill Homemaker Centre about whether all centres should open their stores.

Mother and daughter Robyn and Elise Sherwood yesterday dabbled in some retail therapy at the centre on Yaamba Road on Rockhampton's north side.

It is one of the few places around Rocky that has shops open on Sunday.

The pair agreed it was in their gender to enjoy shopping and if Sunday trading was an option they would most likely be there.

"When you're working a five-day week it's sometimes a hassle to fit all of your shopping into Saturday," Robyn said.

The Rocky woman said she would go shopping a couple of times every week, but wouldn't do much on a Sunday because of the lack of open stores.

"People who move to Rockhampton are usually quite shocked not to have Sunday shopping," Robyn said.

The new Yeppoon Central shopping centre and Keppel Bay Plaza on the coast are both open for Sunday trade, a convenience Elise said would be nice in Rockhampton.

However, Elise was quick to point out that she worked in retail herself and would hate to lose a weekend to work.

"As long as they kept two days off," Elise said.

"Even if I'm called in on a Saturday, at least I know I'm always going to get Sunday off."

Sue McGregor is the manager of the Yeppoon Central shopping centre on the Capricorn Coast which received permission for seven-day trading last year.

Ms McGregor said Sunday trading was particularly popular, both with locals and Rockhampton visitors.

"It's fantastic, absolutely fantastic," she said.

"The flexibility is there if you work all week and you don't have to worry about rushing on a Saturday.

"You've got more time to be leisurely and it becomes more of a family thing."

Ms McGregor said seven-day trade was perfect for the Capricorn Coast because it was a tourist destination. as opposed to Rockhampton.

But the move to Sunday shopping is proving popular for more regional centres in the state.

Our northern neighbours in Mackay have had a hot debate recently as the National Retail Association pushes for Sunday trade.

Wow, Rockhampton has enough Woolworths and discount department stores...
Is there much need for a Myer or David Jones? What is the closest Myer store, Maroochydore?

Shopping centre development proposed for Rockhampton

Plans for a $120 million shopping centre development at Rockhampton were unveiled by Macqaurie CountryWide Trust yesterday.

The Macqaurie CountryWide Trust have lodged a development application with Rockhampton Regional Council after acquiring five sites, including three fronting the Gladstone Road section of the Bruce Highway.

Michael Scott, the group's head of property, said the shopping centre would be located on Gladstone Road, on the section of land between Elizabeth Street and Port Curtis Road.

The centre will also become a part of the Sam's Warehouse complex.

Mr Scott said if the project is to goes ahead, the shopping complex, named Westpoint Shopping Centre will include a Coles supermarket, Big W Discount Department Store, Dendy Cinema complex, Target Department store and 170 specialty stores.

The shopping centre will have two levels with retail floor space of 75,000sqm, 160 specialty shops and multi-storey and rooftop parking for more than 3,100 cars.

Planning on the project will take the developers into late 2009, with construction expected to start in 2010 , pending final council approvals.

Rockhampton Regional Mayor Brad Carter says the proposal has huge potential.

"We're thrilled with the proposal as a council and believe that in the longer-term it would have significant benefits for Rockhampton and the Central Queensland region," he said.

Mayor Carter said such a significant development was also a vote of confidence in the city.

"It is going to generate hundreds of jobs in the construction phase, with hundreds more long-term employment opportunities once the centre is operational," he said.
