| New Yeppen bridge call October 04, 2008 IT might not be as big as the bridge on the River Kwai, but Philip De Costa and Gwen Watson believe the Yeppen Bridge is so vital to the flow of Rockhampton's traffic that there needs to be two of them. Mr De Costa and Mrs Watson have called on Main Roads to duplicate the bridge to keep up with the growing traffic. Main Roads has agreed, but says it needs federal funding to build a new bridge. "For the volume of traffic going over it, the bridge is just too small it needs to be two lanes or rebuilt," Mrs Watson said. She also claimed the bridge was sinking. Mr De Costa said the bridge had the potential to create a massive bottleneck if there were an accident. "They need to duplicate it," Mr De Costa. Main Roads regional director Terry Hill refuted claims that the bridge, which carries 40,000 vehicles each day, was sinking. He said it was inspected annually and recently the asphalt on the approaches to bridge had been smoothed out. "But Main Roads does acknowledge that it needs to be duplicated," Mr Hill said. "The bridge is part of the Bruce Highway so it is federally funded. "We have applied for funding and made preliminary plans for a duplicate bridge, but as of yet there is no funding." A spokesman for Member for Capricornia Kirsten Livermore said funding for a second Yeppen bridge was part of recent discussions regarding upgrades to the Bruce Highway at the southern entrance to Rockhampton.

| ![]() Study cites need for $500m new Fitzroy road bridge by 2016 October 07, 2008 THE prospect of a third road bridge across the Fitzroy River in Rockhampton moves closer today with the publication of an independent study. The report by international engineering group Arup concludes a new bridge to carry a diverted Bruce Highway is a priority to cater for the city's growing population. It could cost a minimum of $500 million and if it doesn't happen traffic on the existing two bridges could "grind to a halt within eight to 10 years", according to Rockhampton Regional councillor Stephen Schwarten. Cr Schwarten is the chair of the infrastructure committee that will discuss the Rockhampton Traffic Study 2008 for the first time at noon today. He said he was 100% in favour of a new bridge by 2016. "The report makes a very powerful argument that can't be ignored. The Bruce Highway is a national road and so we will be looking to the Commonwealth to come up with the money," he said. Federal Member for Capricornia Kirsten Livermore said she would have discussions with infrastructure Minister Anthony Albanese about the city's traffic management issues. "I look forward to seeing the final report," she said. "There is an acknowledgement that the question of traffic through the city has to be addressed, that's why we pledged $5 million last November to a scoping study. "We need to once and for all decide on the best course of action and this report is an important part of the jigsaw that will inform the process." An expanding population and the never-ending growth in road traffic will mean widespread congestion throughout the city unless tens of millions of dollars are spent to increase capacity, says the report. There are two schools of thought about the city's growing population. One predicts that by 2021 Rockhampton will be home to 66,000 people, the other that the city will have grown to house 74,000. Daily traffic flow could balloon from 286,000 trips per day in 2005 to 377,000. Under such a weight of traffic both bridges across the river would not be able to cope. The report recommends an additional river crossing by 2016. Investigation work into a new route for the Bruce Highway through Rockhampton should also start immediately, it says. Mayor Brad Carter said the report's findings made it clear there was potential for enormous congestion. "I think it is important for the council to consider all the implications and how we get our local access roads built into the equation. "I am pleased we are openly discussing it. It's a matter of great public interest and it's important we debate it in the public arena." _______________________________________ www.rockhamptonregion.qld.gov.au Rockhamptons transport network under spotlight Date Published: 7/10/2008 Identifying the major road network improvement projects required within Rockhampton City until 2021, Rockhampton Regional Council will adopt the findings of the Rockhampton Traffic Study 2008 at its Ordinary Council meeting on October 14, 2008. Over the past three years, Council has been undertaking a City wide traffic study by Brisbane-based engineering consultants Arup, which has involved modelling the current and future traffic patterns of the City. Chair of Council’s Infrastructure Committee, Cr Stephen Schwarten said the findings of the Rockhampton Traffic Study 2008 would be adopted by Council to inform the future planning of the transport network in Rockhampton City. “The Final Report of the Rockhampton Traffic Study 2008 will be adopted as a planning guideline to inform the assessment of development applications until the findings of the study are incorporated into the City Plan through the Priority Infrastructure Planning Process,” Cr Schwarten said. “The data from this traffic study, combined with the identification of appropriate levels of service, a funding strategy and the previously developed renewal plan for roads within the City will enable a Strategic Asset Management Plan for Roads within the City to be completed,” he said. Cr Schwarten said the study would also be approved for use by the Main Roads Department in the preparation of the Fitzroy Flood, Freight and Traffic Study, which will produce recommendations for strategies to provide a flood free route through or around the City and to alleviate problems with increasing numbers of heavy vehicles and traffic congestion through the City. “Out of the various options canvassed in the report, a third bridge to the north of the City stands out as the most favoured proposal,” Cr Schwarten said. “The current growth predictions are for a large increase in population to the north and it makes sense to divert this traffic,” he said. During this decision-making process, Council will conduct a community engagement program to keep the community informed and to listen to any concerns residents may have about the impact of a third bridge. Council Officers will now prepare a 10-year network improvement strategy based on the findings of the Rockhampton Traffic Study 2008, with a view to incorporating the network improvement strategy into the Roads Strategic Asset Management Plan and Council’s 10-year financial strategy.
