Townsville Southern Access Corridor Study

Existing Alignment Option

Features:

Design for six freeway standard lanes between Hunter Street and the anticipated location of an entrance to Rocky Springs near Lowe Road.
Design for four freeway standard lanes between Lowe Road and a second anticipated entrance to second Rocky Springs near Serene Valley.
Design for four freeway standard lanes through the Allendale Drive/Bentley Drive intersection to the southern edge of the study area at Killymoon Creek.
Development of three grade separated interchanges at the two access points for Rocky Springs and the Allendale Drive/Bentley Drive intersection.
Closure and redirection of smaller intersections at Zinc Avenue/Vantassel Street, Lowe Road, Julago Street, Muntalunga Drive, Alligator Creek Road, Williams Road and Tindall Court - alternate highway access via a new service road network linked to new interchanges.

There would ultimately be a need to acquire land in various locations on both sides of the existing highway to accommodate a wider corridor. This includes some land from the Prison Farm (North Queensland Field Days), Rocky Springs, Bush Oasis Caravan Park, and the Allendale Drive/Bentley Drive intersection.

Separate Alignment Option

Features:

Design for six freeway standard lanes between Hunter Street and near Vantassel Street Waste Facility where the highway and arterial roads split.
Design for a new corridor seaward of the existing railway line with one freeway standard lane in each direction plus overtaking lanes running seaward of the TCC Waste Facility then following the existing Sunnyside Street before skirting the foothills of the Muntalunga Range, overpassing Bentley Drive in the vicinity of Barnham Road before rejoining the current highway alignment south of Tindall Court. Corridor wide enough to accommodate four lanes.

The ultimate alignment of the potential section of new highway between Bentley Drive and the current highway alignment south of Tindall Court is as yet unknown and will require additional consultation.

Design for six freeway standard lanes between Vantassel Street Waste Facility and the anticipated entrance to Rocky Springs near Lowe Road.
Design for six arterial standard lanes between the intersection of Lowe Road and the second anticipated entrance to Rocky Springs near Serene Valley.
Design for two arterial standard lanes with dedicated passing lanes between the second Rocky Springs entrance and the southern edge of the study area at Killymoon Creek.
Development of two grade separated interchanges at the Lowe Road Rocky Springs access and the junction of the new and existing highways near the southern edge of the study area at Killymoon Creek.
Redevelopment of existing highway intersections at the southern highway access for Rocky Springs, Muntalunga Drive, Allendale Drive/Bentley Drive, Alligator Creek Road, Williams Road and Tindall Court.
Closure of current Zinc Avenue/Vantassel Street, Lowe Road, and Julago Street intersections with alternate access via a service road network.

There would ultimately be a need to acquire land in various locations to accommodate both corridors, including some Prison Farm land (North Queensland Field Days), Sunnyside Street, Rocky Springs, between the existing railway line and Muntalunga Range, seaward of the existing railway line between Bentley Drive and the junction of the new highway alignment and the existing highway, Muntalunga Drive intersection, Allendale Drive/Bentley Drive intersection and Tindall Court intersection.

Hybrid Alignment Option

This option allows the current highway to remain largely unchanged with the bulk of traffic redirected onto new freeway standard roads.

Features:

Design for six freeway standard lanes between Hunter Street and near Vantassel Street where the highway and arterial roads diverge at a major interchange with four freeway standard lanes into Rocky Springs and four freeway standard lanes on a new alignment which follows the existing Sunnyside Street skirting the foothills of the Muntalunga Range, before crossing the existing rail line and the alignment of the current highway at the anticipated second Rocky Springs entrance between Julago and Serene Valley.
Design for a new corridor from the second Rocky Springs entrance skirting the foothills of the Muntalunga Range, overpassing Bentley Drive in the vicinity of Barnham Road before rejoining the current highway alignment south of Tindall Court. Corridor width to be sufficient to accommodate four lanes.

The ultimate alignment of the potential section of new highway between Bentley Drive and the current highway alignment south of Tindall Court is as yet unknown and will require additional consultation.
Maintenance of the current highway from Lowe Road to the southern end of the study area in its current configuration as a local arterial road carrying traffic between access points to the new highway alignments. Progressive improvements to the current highway within the existing corridor.
Development of two grade separated interchanges at Lowe Road and the junction of the new and existing highways near the southern edge of the study area at Killymoon Creek.

Maintenance of existing highway intersections at the southern highway access for Rocky Springs, Muntalunga Drive, Allendale Drive/Bentley Drive, Alligator Creek Road, Williams Road and Tindall Court.
Closure of current Zinc Avenue/Vantassel Street, Lowe Road, and Julago Street intersections with alternate access via a service road network.
There would ultimately be a need to acquire land in various locations to accommodate both corridors, including some Prison Farm land (North Queensland Field Days), Sunnyside Street, Rocky Springs, between Rocky Springs and Muntalunga Range, seaward of the existing railway line between Bentley Drive and the junction of the new highway alignment and the existing highway, Muntalunga Drive intersection, Allendale Drive/Bentley Drive intersection and Tindall Court intersection.

Fuk me the motorway has grown so much in the last month, What a shocker!

Hearvy's RR overpass:

Beck Road Overpass:

Bohle Bridge:

Contruction for the new overpass/interchange at Woodlands:

Aug 08 Info!

The variable message signs will be located on Hervey Range Road before the Ring Road on-ramp for inbound (to city) traffic and before the new Landel Court-St Andrews Close roundabout for outbound (from city) traffic.
This placement has been selected so that people using Hervey Range Road will be given advance notice if the bridges are flooded and can use the Ring Road instead(inbound) or turn at the roundabout and go back to use the Ring Road (outbound).

2. As with other two-laned motorways, there will be no medians except where traffic is merging, such as on-ramp merging traffic areas.

3. Where vehicles enter the Ring Road from the Riverway Drive on-ramp, drivers will NOT be allowed to use the centre or through lane, which will have boundaries marked with solid white lines rather than the current dotted lines.

4. There will be surveillance cameras along the Ring Road as well as provisions (one on each side) for emergency vehicles to do a u-turn or for police to pull over vehicles.

5. There will be new traffic lights at the on and off ramps on Hervey Range Road and at the intersection with Shaw and Dalrymple Roads.

6. The Ring Road is part of the National Motorway Road Network and not a local road. This means the speed limit is 100 km/h and pedestrians/cyclists are not allowed to use the motorway.

7. A shared cyclist-pedestrian pathway will run from the Shaw-Dalrymple intersection to Hervey Range Road, where it will connect with current (and future) cyclist and pedestrian paths.

8. An intersection has been constructed on the Bohle Plains section of the Ring Road that will eventually connect to Kalynda Parade. This is the planned internal road and northern exit for the Kalynda Chase development. The
intersection is in the part of the Ring Road that will eventually become local road when the final motorway section to Deeragun is constructed.

Small part of Townsville's Stage two Motorway Development

This is just a small part of the overall enormity of stage two, The new extensions are massive..... Well to NQ standards anyway, Here are some pictures I took yesterday of Stage two. I also dont think there going to make the December deadline.
