| Federation Island architect: Erick van Egeraat ![]() Federation Island is a 330 ha artificial archipelago, located off the coast of Sochi, in the Russian Black Sea. The archipelago offers residences, hotels, cultural, leisure and recreational facilities. Federation Island will be built in the shape of the Russian Federation and reflect the country's major geographical features. The Russian river network was used as a reference for the island's waterways; the high mountains inspire the island relief. The project comprises seven main, more than a dozen private, and three breakwater islands. Sandy beaches, dunes, grasslands, bushes, small forests and riverside offer much variety for accommodation ranging from beach residences, luxury villas and apartments to dune, river and cliff houses. ![]() The idea behind the design was not only to rebuild the geography of Russia, but also to maximise the coastline of the Island. Even though Russia has a very long overall coastline it is only the coast in the Sochi area that has a pleasant climate throughout all year; a humid subtropical climate with an average summer temperature of 25 to 28 degrees Celsius. Federation Island will increase the coastline of Sochi by 70 km. The breakwater islands are required to protect the archipelago from big waves during stormy times. The project is being developed by M-Industries of St. Petersburg and designed by Erick van Egeraat in co-operation with Dutch engineering companies Witteveen + Bos and Van Oord Dredging and Marine. The buildings on the islands will involve a number of architects. ![]()

| ![]() The new Sochi Olympic Stadium will be built in the new Sochi Olympic Park. It will be located within walking distance of the Olympic Village and the capacity of the stadium will be 40,000. The Olympic Stadium, designed like a shell to recall the glories of Fabergé art, will provide a spectacular seaside setting for the Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the 2014 Winter Olympics. ![]() The stadium walls and roof will be one continuous glass surface designed to reflects sunlight off the sea during the day. The bowl opens to the north, allowing for a direct view of the Krasnaya Polyana Mountains, and the upper deck is open to the south, allowing for a view of the Black Sea. It will cost $63.5 million to build the venue, including the temporary works for the Olympics. The stadium should open in 2012. The facility will serve as a training centre and venue for the Russian Football National Team after the Games. ![]()

| ![]() The Bolshoi Ledovi Dvorets is a description of a 12,000-seat multi-purpose arena in Sochi, Russia that is currently in the planning stages. "Bolshoi" literally means "Major", hence the correct English name for the Bolshoi Ledovi Dvorets would be the "Major Ice Palace". It is due to be open in 2009. After it is completed, it will host some of the ice hockey events at the 2014 Winter Olympics along with Maly Ice Palace. The venues will be located 300 m apart. ![]() It will cost $180.1 million to build the venue, including the temporary works for the Olympics. After the Olympics, it will serve as a sports arena and concert venue.
