| Has anyone ever done this before, or is doing it now? It's mainly for people who are retired or semi-retired, in either their 50s and 60s. It's volunteer work that I do. I DO however, receive a monthly stipend for doing it though, so it helps pay the bills. I help children who are having trouble with their reading. It IS a rewarding job because it makes me feel that I'm helping children with their reading / educational skills. They range in age from 6 years old to eleven years old, first grade through the fifth grade. One particular child - an 8-year-old boy soon to be 9, I began tutoring a few months ago. This little boy, though he has trouble reading, has a heart of gold!! He's sweet, respectful, kind and he really admires me and likes me very much!! He has touched my heart so deeply in a way like no other child there has done!!! I mean, I like ALL the kids there, but this particular one has melted my heart so warmly!! I sometimes wish that he were my own son. He likes to talk very deeply and immensely about the things that he loves to read about which are about science, nature and animals! I really get a kick out of him and the way that he has latched onto me so aggressively and so deeply in the short time that we've known each other! I just LOVE to listen to him talk on and on and on and on!! I give him all the time that he needs to read and talk. I sometimes feel like a kid again myself when I'm with him!! He's truly an amazing kid!! I usually have him read some, then I read some to him. It works out good that way. He's really a doll!! He says that I remind him of his father. I thanked him for saying that, and it made me feel so proud to know that I'm making a lasting impression on him like he's doing with me! It'll be so sad to think that I might not get to see him at all during the summer months, but if he's in the same school next season and is still in the tutoring program, I'll gladly & happily want to tutor him again! I want to continue working with him some more! He doesn't like to be refered to as being little, but I told him already that he's my little buddy. I love him very much - as though he were my own son!! I don't have any children of my own, but THIS kid makes me feel so close to him that it's almost like having a child of my own!! He's truly one of a kind! One of the best. ![]() Last edited by Daquan13; 1st June 2008 at 19:42.. | |||||||||||
