I think what he meant as culturally European is being Christian. Israel is a modern country but if we think they describe Europe as Chrisandome recently, both your and my country is out! Though Armenians are not culturally European except their religion (I lived with Armenians many years, their traditions and life style are even Asian-a mix of Caucasus and some middle east. And only immigrants and Istanbul Armenians have European identity in the tradition and life style)
