| Hello, this page quite surprised me, I thought Istanbul was Minaret City and not a Skyscraper city. In school geography textbooks and tourist brochures one always sees mosques and minarets in photos of Istanbul. It would be good to give some more information about the kind of companies and corporations which are housed in these buildings, as outside Turkey Turkish firms and corporations are not well known. Some like Garanti Bank and Yapi Kredi bank also do exist here (branches for the Turkish emigrants) but apart from that one finds Turkish products (food and basic household items made by Ulker and ETI) only in small grocery stores and minimarkets in parts of Utrecht with a high number of Turkish inhabitants. Does Turkey have, besides these food industries, other significant industrial firms and what do they produce? Do they export and where to? Are all these towers in full use or have they been built mainly as a refuge against hyperinflation? I have seen in collectors' stores banknotes of 5 and 10 million Turkish lira and that is a bad sign (comparable with Germany in 1923 and Argentina in the 1970ies and 1980ies). What happened to the old city (the part which was Byzantine Constantinople and the Ottoman capital Stambul)? Does the concept of social housing (for the poor and the rural migrants) exist in Istanbul (here these usually get a fairly decent house at a relatively low rent), or are these groups condemned to live in shantytowns and degraded housing? Thanks in advance for informing me and other SSL users! | |||||||||||
