Rep Power: 2  | Japan Issues Tsunami alert Quote: Tsunami warning issued for Hokkaido Japan's Meteorological Agency has issued a tsunami warning covering wide areas along the Sea of Okhotsk and the east side of Hokkaido, northern Japan.
The agency says an earthquake of magnitude 8.1 occurred 390 kilometers northeast of the island of Etorofu on Wednesday evening.
The agency says the height of the tsunami waves could be up to 2 meters along the Sea of Okhotsk and one meter along the Pacific Ocean coasts.
The agency expects that the tsunami was expected to reach the Pacific side of Hokkaido at 9:10 p.m. and along the Sea of Okhotsk at 9:20 p.m. local time. But no more information is available at present.
The agency also issued a tsunami advisory for wide areas along the Sea of Japan side of Hokkaido and the Pacific side of Tohoku, Kanto areas and Shizuoka Prefecture, saying that waves of up to 50 centimeters may hit these areas.
The agency says the height of waves could be several times higher depending on undersea and coastal geological features.
The agency is urging people not to approach coastal areas.
The fisheries cooperative association of Kushiro City in Hokkaido says that no irregular high tide has been seen as of 5 minutes past 9.

The agency says there is a possibility of a destructive tsunami in the following areas:Kuril Islands, North Coasts of Irian Jaya, North Coasts of Papua New Guinea, Mariana Islands, Micronesia, North Coasts of Solomon Islands and in the Solomon Sea. Japanese and Russian authorities have ordered people in coastal areas to evacuate to higher areas or are calling on people to avoid coastal areas. The agency says the first tsunami wave of 40 cm was observed in Nemuro in eastern Hokkaido at 9:29 PM Japan time. More tsunamis were later observed elsewhere around Hokkaido and in other regions in Japan. In Kushiro, a wave of 20 cm was observed.
