| I think Turkey is much more similar to U.S. than E.U. Why? EU believes in standards for everyone and everything, citizens should have equal opportunities, like education system and health care. Eventhough this highly increases the quality of society it weakens the country. Therefore EU don't have Harvard's or State of the art hospitals. On the other hand, in US and Turkey, there are extremely smart and well educated people who drives the country. In the latter one this has to be this way since we don't have excess resources so we unfairly give more opportunities to gifted people and have to neglect the rest. Therefore we have some really effective institutions but also have large amount of not very well educated people as a side effect. If Turkey becomes a EU member, EU needs to supply resources until some standards can be established. And if you think about the land mass and population increase of Turkey into account Turkey would easily become the King state of EU. And I don't think EU (or any country in the world) wants to help someone who can easily rule them in return when he heals. Last comment; As some fellow friend mentioned, EU is projected to lose its competitiveness in the areas of industrial production and health-care, so why should Turkish working population look after retired Europeans and pay their retirement money with our taxes instead of building better infrastructure in our own country? | |||||||||||

| I totally agree with all what Mert says... I also believe and almost said that Turkey is so much similar to the US rather than EU, yet I didn't say it, because there is no proposal to join the United States of America. It would be a redundant comment on my side. However, I want to mention again that Mert is totally correct in saying that society-wise we are more similar to the USA rather than EU. I also feel much more comfortable and adapt to american society than european. I always feel hatred, unfriendliness and fear in european people towards Turks. They are always afraid of us becoming strong again like old days and clearly do what they can do to slow it down. They just try to slow our progress speed down, since they are very well aware of the fact that they can't stop the process. So, europeans don't want to improve Turkey faster by accepting her into EU now (when Turkey needs it), but they also want to keep the option of Turkey's EU membership to be friends when they need Turkey (they want Turkey to be on EU's side and look after them, when Turkey is strong and not in need of EU funds anymore, which will be the case in 10-15 years) American society is corrupted mostly, yet individuals are friendly and flexible. They have the potential to accept different cultures. This is what europeans don't even have a trace of. I felt so much more home in america compared to europe... | |||||||||||
