Default Welcome Back Asim!!!

Hello there Ayvalik brother soul!!!

I was happy to see your posts in the Hellenic forum so I decided to contact you here as I failed to visit this forum for a while since it is Carnival season in Greece and I was partying from Friday afternoon till 5:00 in the morning today. Well, I am glad that you are still alive and that you made it to this forum with your original Arrogantus corruptus avatar. Feels great to see you back.

I very much enjoyed the Istanbul videos which reminded me of that night that we drove along Buyukdere Avenue, one day after Christmas in 2002. Please give -again- my regards to sis and Family and to Kerem who I hope is in good health and shape. Nice song by the Depeche Mode in one of them BTW (has to be them isn't it? ). I advise you to buy (if you don't have it already that is) their latest "best of" which has a CD and a DVD with their original video clips. I believe the highlight of the DVD is the new version of "Enjoy the silence" which ends up in a Marylin Manson type of guitar thing. You'll love it.

Before I leave you, here are two pics of the baklava and chocolate cake that my mother prepared for our next door neighbour (a rich architect who is a rock and roll enthousiast, an Istanbul lover, AND a highrise fan, all in one, I am happy to have him living next door).

Immediately after it came out of the oven yesterday:

The neighbour's pack. Watch the cake.

I wish I could share this with you and the rest of the forumers here, although I don't know if you eat your baklava with less syrup than usual. In my area everybody is on a diet and thus, you know, we don't juice up our foods and cakes with excess ingredients (this goes for the confectionary stores in Istiklal Caddesi where you could see whole towers of baklava and other sweet delights with the syrups running down. Yummie!!!)

Anyway, this time keep in touch cowboy...

My mother took the first lessons about baklava and other teaching and oriental delights, including what we call "kataifi" which may coma from a turkish or arabic root, i.e. "Kataif" or something.

According to our family's tradition which dates back to the days my grandparents were living in Ayvalik (i.e. early 20th century ), a home-made delight was always the order of the day both for the guests in the house, as well as taking it to the house of a friend that we want to visit.

If I was born and raised in Istanbul, then for sure if I was to visit you, etc, my mother (and my grandmother if she was alive) would prepare something and I reckon your mothers would do the same.

As for the recipes of these dishes, they tend to vary, depending on the origin of the cook and / or recipe. For some reason, my mother puts different fillings compared to, say, an Istanbul cook. She put almonds, walnuts and some sesami. On the other hand, In the TV I have seen pistaccio fillings too.

Anyway, we talk later...

I didn't know that part of your family were Anatolian Greek... two thumbs up for gm... hehehe..

Istanbul food is now under attack by south eastern Turkish/Kurdish food... Too many lahmacuns, adana kebaps, hot spices invaded the restaurants. You simply can't drink raki with lahmacun! We should stick to the mezes and the fish...
