Default downtown Greensboro, North Carolina photos part 1

hello everyone here is a bunch of photos I took in downtown Greensboro. Warning....there are alot of photos.

A little info about Greensboro. The city is the 3rd largest city in NC. Only Charlotte and Raleigh are larger. Greensboro has a population of 240,000 with a combined MSA population of 1.5 million. The metro is know as The Piedmont Triad anchored by the cities of Greensboro, Winston-Salem and High Point. The traditional industries of Greensboro includes Textiles and Tobbaco. The corporate headquarters of Wrangler is in Greensboro as well as the corporate headquarters and manufacturing plant for Lorillard Tobbaco Company (maker of Newport Cigarettes) in addition to traditional industries the city has a biotech/hightech manufacturing industry and is a major transportation hub. addtional major headquarters in the city:

- Volvo Trucks of North America
- Lincoln Financial Group (insurance division)
- Honda Aircraft Company (world headquarters)
- RF Micro Devices (maker of computer chips)
- VF Corporation (fortune 500 company)

a number of interstate highway intersect in Greensboro (I-40, I-85, I-73, future I-785 and the I-840 beltway) in 1998 FedEx selected Greensboro for it mid-atlantic air cargo hub. The hub will open in 2009 and has already attracted companies to the area such as Honda Aircraft Company which will manufactur jets and a Dell computer factory. The hub has also attracted future developments such as Triad Tower, a 22-story condo/office tower near the airport in Greensboro. The tower will have restaurants, pubic observational deck and possibally an IMAX theater.

Greensboro is also home to the Atlantic Coast Conference (the ACC) and host the ACC mens and Women's college basketball tournaments from time to time at the 23,000 seat Greensboro Coliseum. Other attractions in Greensboro include Wet'n Wild Emerald Pointe waterpark, the Grandover Resort, Guilford Courthouse National Military Park, Blandwood mansion and a number of art galleries and museums in the downtown area.

Greensboro seems to be a hotbed for reality TV stars. Greensboro was even an audition city for American Idol in 2005. Here are famous Reality tv stars from Greensboro and the surrounding area.

Greensboro - Kelly Wigglesworth (runner-up on Survior 1)
Greensboro - Jeff Varner (from Survior 2 & is now a TV news anchor for FOX 8 news in nearby High Point)
Greensboro - Chris Daughtry (from American Idol)
High Point - Fantasia Barrino (American Idol 2004 winner)

other downtown pics

here is the old Wachovia tower being converted to a mixed-use condo building

Center-City Park

the are starting to add the balconies on Center Pointe. Center Pointe is located across the street from Center-City Park and will have a restaurant on the first floor.

First Horizon Ballpark

Greensboro Coliseum viewed from downtown

the zoom on my new camera is pretty amazing. I took the next two pictures from the Bellemeade parking deck across the street from Center-City Park. The Koury Convention Center is at least 3 miles from where I took these photos.

Here is Southside in downtown Greensboro

This is "The Press" Its a wine cafe'/restaurant. It looks like one of those buildings in the French Quarter in New Orleans. On certain nights of the weeks you can listen to live jazz music. Its pretty packed at nights.

Southside townhomes

a 300 plus unit apartment complex in Southside called "City View Apartments" is under construction. It will consist of several apartment buildings, a pool, cardio center, cyber cafe', club house and residential business center.

This is a commercial/retail development being built in southside near The Press and City View Apartments
